Japan supports energy sector with $14m

Japan has provided a grant of $14 million to support Ghana’s energy sector.

The amount is to be used to improve electricity distribution in the Brong Ahafo and the Northern regions.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, signed the grant agreement for Ghana, while the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Naoto Nikai, initialled

it for his country, at a ceremony in Accra Monday.

At the same function, Ms Tetteh and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Resident Representative in Ghana, Mr Jiro Inamura, exchanged notes.

Mr Nikai said the money would be used to improve electricity distribution to enable people in the two regions to benefit from agricultural, health, educational and industrial development activities.

He said the assistance was expected to help improve the living conditions of the people in the two regions and also enhance the cordial relations between Ghana and Japan.

Ms Tetteh recounted the numerous forms of assistance Japan had offered Ghana, especially in grants, and commended the country for the support.

“As a nation, these acts of magnanimity will never be lost on us and we are profoundly grateful to the people and government of Japan,” she added.
