Police bans demonstrations

DCOP Rose Bio AtingaDCOP Rose Bio AtingaThe Ghana Police Service has banned demonstrations until further notice, as it puts personnel on stand-by for the weekend and holiday sittings by the Supreme Court, which is hearing the election petition.

The Police Administration has, therefore, directed the public to suspend any mass activity that would require protection from the police, since that cannot be assured.

A statement issued by Director-General in charge of Administration, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, said the service had committed a significant number of personnel to the maintenance of law and order at the Supreme Court where the election petition by the NPP is being heard.

The statement also said the police administration did not have enough resources to cater for other gatherings while court proceedings continued.

The NPP’s 2012 Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; his running mate, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, and the Chairman, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, are challenging the outcome of the 2012 polls, after citing widespread irregularities.
