Chief of Heman Prestea Commends Prez Mahama For Underground Mine Project

The Chief of Heman Prestea, Nana Nteboah Pra IV has welcomed the move by President John Dramani Mahama to set the pace for work to begin on an underground mine at the community.

Nana Nteboah Pra IV extolled the initiative to begin work on the mining site, which will be run by the Golden Star Resources Limited.

The commencement of work on the mine was one of the concerns bothering the Chiefs and residents in the locality but Chief of Himan Prestea has expressed profound gratitude to the President for paying attention to their plea.

He was optimistic that the underground mining site, when started, will help resolve the unemployment situation at Prestea and also, better the lives of the residents.

He recounted that work on the site was stalled for years due to the fall of gold price, so, the re-opening would boost the activities of the mining companies in the area.

President John Mahama last Friday pledged commitment to commission an underground mine at Prestea, for work to commence on the project.

Speaking to Radio Gold on Monday, he commended government saying “friday was a great day for the citizens of Heman Prestea with the re-opening of the underground mine. That is the first stage of the whole project. And we are hoping that they won’t face challenge that will result in another closure.”

“With the re-opening of this particular mine, the unemployment situation in our catchment area will be reduced. Social economic activities will go up. Mining related businesses will see a major boost in whatever services that they provide in the main mining company. And even within, the family setup, I think that parents will be able to take proper care of their kids, especially those who were affected by the closure.” he added.

He also appealed to government to hold talks with small-scale miners to adopt the appropriate strategies to curb illegal mining in the country.
