John Mensah could profit from the injury to defender Onyekachi Apam at Stade Rennes.

The Ghana defender is in direct competition with the Nigerian for a regular starting place at the French club.

Mensah played the entire duration of Rennes 2-0 win at Brest on Saturday after returning from injury.

The former Ghana captain had struggled for regular game time due to his injury problems and the presence of the Nigeria defender.

With Apam now out with a muscle problem, Mensah is presented with a unique opportunity to claim a regular starting place with the Red and Blacks.

The ex Sunderland loanee has emerged the only viable choice for manager Frederic Antonetti to partner John Boye in the heart of Rennes defence with four matches remaining in Ligue 1.

The Ghana international now has the opportunity to impress managers of the French club in the remaining matches in order to land a long-term contract when his loan stint expires at the end of the season.
