Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has presented a cheque for Gh¢ 12,000 to 14-year-old orphan, Vivian Asare, a Junior High School student from Kukuom in the Brong Ahafo Region to enable her undergo surgery at the Korle Bu Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra.

Vivian has a hole-in heart as well as a spinal disorder both of which require surgery. Touched by her plight, some Newmont employees contributed Gh¢6,000 and the company matched the employees’ contributions which will enable her to undergo surgery in May.

At a short ceremony at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Sunyani, Newmont Ahafo Mine’s Communications Manager, Agbeko Azumah, said the gesture was in line with Newmont’s social responsibility value it encourages employees to inculcate, hence the company’s decision to match the contributions by the employees.

He added that it was the responsibility of society to support the underprivileged and expressed the hope that Vivian would successfully go through the surgery and lead a normal life afterwards.

The Methodist Bishop of Sunyani, Rt. Rev. Kofi Asare-Bediako thanked Newmont for the kind gesture and appealed for more support for the girl.

For her part, an elated Vivian, a JHS 2 student, said she was overwhelmed by Newmont’s intervention.
