MP calls for investigation into leasing of community for mining

Member of Parliament (MP)for Ayensuono, in the Eastern region, Samuel Ayeh Paye, is calling for immediate investigations into the leasing of a mountainous settlement at Otoase near Nsawam for mining.

Over six thousand residents of the community are likely to be rendered homeless if the mining activities go on.

The MP said a mountain which serve as an important source of water for the community will be affected if authorities fail to intervene.

There is tension in the town as the mining company whose name is yet to be known is set to begin operation.

Mr. Ayeh Paye told Joy News they intend to lodge a formal complaint to the Minerals Commission.

The MP also said the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area also has no knowledge of who might have given the miners the permission to mine in the area.

The MP have indicated the people of the community plan to hold a demonstration to draw the attention of the Minerals Commission, the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other stakeholders to the issue.
