The American embassy in Khartoum on Wednesday issued a statement, welcoming the progress made in the implementation of the cooperation agreement between Sudan and South Sudan.
The embassy also called for closer cooperation in resolving pending sensitive questions, including the oil rich Abyei region.
The statement stressed that the U.S. applauded the decision of the two governments to immediately open eight border crossing corridors.
It added that cooperation on managing border crossings and trade has the potential of producing significant benefits for the citizens of both nations.
“We are also encouraged by Sudan and South Sudan’s ongoing efforts to demilitarise the border area, and urge both governments to continue working closely together to fully implement their agreements and resolve the remaining issues such as Abyei,’’ the communique said.
PANA recalls that the agreement was signed on Sept. 27, 2012, and that the implementation progress was reviewed at the April 22nd to 23rd, 2013, Joint Political Security Mechanism meeting facilitated by the AU High Level Implementation Panel. (PANA/NAN)
