One Killed At Apedwa

AT LEAST one person was killed and another arrested yesterday morning at Apedwa in the East Akim Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region in an ensuing fisticuffs with the local police.

The unidentified deceased, aged about 25 and Alex Antwi, 30, (the arrested person) were said to be amongst tens of young men terrifying and robbing residents in Apedwa under the influence of weed.

Sources said the drug peddlers or addicts far out-numbered the three police officers assigned to accost them.

The policemen went berserk when the suspects became confrontational, killing one in a shoot-out.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that about four of the suspects, instead of running for cover, decided to match the police boot for boot.

The deceased who was one of those four threatened the policemen with a machete he was holding, provoking the police to open fire.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP James Azumah Abass Abaah, who confirmed the incident, said the deceased was yet to be identified.

He told DAILY GUIDE that the Station Officer in charge the Apedwa Police Station upon a tip-off yesterday morning, at about 8:30 detailed three policemen to arrest some young men in the Apedwa vicinity suspected to be hiding in a cocoa farm smoking weed, terrorizing and robbing unsuspecting victims of their valuables.

However, the operation turned bloody when one of the suspects, now deceased, sought to attack one of the three policemen with a machete.

In a self defence the police opened fire and the suspect (deceased) was hit in the process.

Whilst the wounded suspect was being sent to the Suhum Government Hospital, he gave up the ghost.

According to the Police boss, the suspect was pronounced dead on arrival.

He said his outfit has lunged a full-scale investigation into the incident.

At the time of filing this report, a team of crime scene expects had been assigned to the scene.
