General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nkeita has called on lawyers of the petitioners in the ongoing Election Petition before the Supreme Court to school their key witness on Ghana’s electoral laws to avoid further humiliation.
He said the evidence being presented in court by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia keeps crippling the petitioners case which is seeking to annul the presidential results of the 2012 election.
On day six of hearing, lead counsel for the president, Tony Lithur ended his cross-examination of Dr. Bawumia paving way for the lawyer of the Electoral Commission (EC) to begin his questioning.
Lawyer Quarshie-Idun during his cross-examination, sought to challenge Dr Bawumia’s claims that polling agents are mere observers in an election. He did so by tendering in evidence the EC’s guidelines for the 2012 election which incorporated the role of polling agents and processes for special voting.
Dr. Bawumia who is also the second petitioner in the case insisted that polling agents are exalted observers adding it the responsibility of the EC officials to run the elections.
But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Johnson Asiedu Nketia scoffed at what he described as Dr. Bawumia’s ‘ignorance’ of the electoral laws used in the 2012 elections.
He could not fathom why the key witness with all his economic credentials has no clue about Ghana’s electoral laws, the work of polling agents and their importance to the electoral process.
Asiedu Nketia was of the opinion that Dr. Bawumia is doing a great disservice to the NPP’s case because according to him, people like Kwabena Agyapong, Dan Botwi and O.B Amoah who were part of IPAC are better placed to answer questions on electoral laws.
General Mosquito as he is popular known noted that the evidence being presented in court by Dr. Bawumia gives more credence to the NDC’s claim that all the brouhaha about electoral malpractices by the NPP are mere allegations and not based on concrete facts.
He said the court room is getting more exciting because the NPP’s diabolic plans are being exposed.
“I don’t understand why Dr. Bawumia has allowed himself to be used as a sacrificial lamb by the NPP” he said.
Asiedu Nketia said looking at the way the issues are unfolding in court, he is of the firm conviction that when the court gives its ruling, it will favour the NDC.
