Brong Ahafo doctors still providing medical services despite GMA strike

Doctors have activated a second phase of their strike, which involves withdrawal of emergency services to patients who need them.

Doctors at the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital in Sunyani have asked residents in the region and its environs not to be alarmed by the activation of the second phase of the strike by members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Jacob Abebrese, have indicated to regional correspondent, Kuuku Abban, that sufficient contingency measures have been put in place to ensure lives are not lost.

Another way the doctors are ensuring no life is lost is by liaising with doctors of private hospitals in the region for assistance in serious surgery cases.

Dr Jacob Abebrese said the hospital is also using non-doctors to treat emergency cases since the department cannot be closed down entirely.

Correspondent Kuuku Aban also reports that the outpatients department of the hospital was attending to patients. The emergency department was also busy as doctors, nurses and hospital assistants were seen treating fresh cases of injuries.

A doctor who spoke on anonymity state that though they (doctors) are on strike, some of them took full responsibility for their patients.
