The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Rivers State Chapter strongly condemns the reported suspension of the duly elected chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government, Hon Timothy Paul Nsirim by the Rivers State House of Assembly without regard to the rule of law.
“By this action, the leadership and members of the Assembly have not only embarrassed themselves but have gone further to demonstrate to the public that they do not know how to handle issues legitimately to prove their unbiased and objective posture and disposition in political matters”, the party said today in Port Harcourt.
It is quite unfortunate that the matter that was never debated and taken according to the provisions of the relevant sections of the law was considered by a few and visionless group which calls itself House Committee on Local Government Affairs, the result of which action was the allegation of reckless spending of public funds without due process and security breach leveled against the chairman and councilors of Obio/Akpor LGA.
The ACN statement issued by the state Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam also noted that the conduct of the State Assembly in all of these issues have further confirmed the fact, and justifiably speak more of their rubber-stamp status, and the political immaturity of the members of the Assembly.
“We feel disappointed and ashamed by this action which is undemocratic, unpopular, regrettable, unjustifiable and indefensible. It is a show of the failure of our Legislative Arm, which clearly portrays their total dependence on the Executive Arm being led by their master, Rotimi Amaechi”, Needam said.
ACN again calls on Gov Amaechi, his agents and other government officials to desist from making unguided utterances, statements and taking actions capable of igniting crisis in the state. “In the face of this recent development in the state, it will do us better if they don’t choose to utter utterances or take actions that could spark civil unrest in our beloved state. They need to be civilized in every action taken, so things do not get worse”.
As a responsible political party, we have always advocated justice for all, and at all times prefer the part of justice in offering leadership and governance to our people. It is therefore our conviction that the duly elected and, no doubt, one out of the few performing chairmen in the state, Hon Timothy Nsirim of Obio/Akpor Council does not deserve such dragonian action by the Rivers State House of Assembly who acted, on a faceless petition and concocted lies, to score a one on one draw in the ongoing political drama playing out in the State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
“It is our expectation that the State Assembly would have ensured justice in a time of apparent political friction in the state. They cannot deny the fact that they have murdered democracy on the altar of injustice”, Needam said.
The ACN accused the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi of using his position to harass, intimidate, arrest, prosecute and victimize Rivers people who are perceived to oppose his style of governance and careless utterances and statements.
We therefore call on the Rivers State House of Assembly to urgently, in the interest of redeeming their already soured image, rescind its decision and reinstate the Obio/Akpor Chairman and Councilors.
