Hearts of Oak ran the risk of losing key defender Godwin Osei-Bonsu on a free transfer as his contract expires at the end of the season.

The central defender is ready to walk for free after spending five years with the former African champions.

FIFA laws even permits the 24-year-old to start negotiations with other interested clubs with less than six-months left on his existing deal.

This puts the club at great risk of losing the player they have nurtured for the past five seasons for absolutely nothing.

Hearts are in advanced talks with captain Mahatma Otoo over a contract extension – underlining the player’s importance to the club.

They have however failed to do same with the key defender who is waiting patiently for his contract to run out at the end of the campaign.

“My contract expires at the end of the season but so far I have not heard anything from the club,” Osei-Bonsu told Accra-based Happy FM.

“I am there waiting on them (Hearts) but so far nothing yet so we look to see what happens next.”

Osei-Bonsu’s confirmation of his contract expiration date will alert clubs of his availability in the off-season.

He is even at liberty to open talks with rivals Asante Kotoko with a view of joining them at the end of the current campaign.
