LAGOS — NIGERIA Union of Journalists, NUJ, yesterday, said from tomorrow operations of media houses defaulting in the payment of salaries to members would be paralaysed.
NUJ’s President, Mohammed Garba, who spoke in Lagos, said unless affected media houses assured on when they would pay the salaries and arrears, they would not be spared.
Briefing aviation correspondents at the domestic terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Garba said: “If at the end of the two weeks, there is no communications or commitments from them, we are going to take a very serious action against them.”
He was accompanied by Mr. Liman Shuaib, NUJ National Secretary, and Mr. Deji Elumoye, Chairman, Lagos State council of NUJ.
Garba explained that the two weeks ultimatum given to defaulting media organisations would expire on April 17.
He said: “Besides the turning of the sod of Lagos Council of NUJ guest house slated for tomorrow, the picketing of defaulting media houses is the main reason we are in Lagos.
“We will be meeting with the President, Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, to discuss some things.”
We are also going to meet with the President, Radio and Television Workers Union, RATAWU, to further strategise on how the picketing would go on successfully.
“We are starting from Lagos because this is where we have the largest concentration of major media houses and most of the correspondents of various media organisations have their headquarters in Lagos.”
“So I think we should start from Lagos and gradually extend it to other parts of the country.’’
Garba lamented that NUJ leadership had been receiving complaints from various media houses, including state-owned media organisations that were not paying after the briefing of two weeks ago.
