A 60 year-old cocoa farmer collapsed and died at the Agona Swedru Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday when he appeared before it for killing his wife at Agona Nyakrom.
Kofi Takyi inflicted multiple cutlass wounds on his wife who had been threatening to divorce him. The Agona Nyakrom District Police Commander, Superintendent Joseph M. Ackah, briefing the Press said the suspect confessed after his arrest that he killed his wife Madam Ama Akomah.
The Police Commander said Takyi was arrested at Agona Kwamang his home town by the inhabitants and handed over to the Nyakrom Police at the Weekend.
He said Takyi fled into the bush after butchering the woman.
Superintendent Ackah said when the suspect was sent to the Agona Nsaba Police cells he suddenly started vomiting and was rushed to the local health Center where he was treated and discharged.
He said the suspect was sent to Agona Swedru Magistrates’ Court to be remanded into prison custody to enable the police to continue with their investigations but unfortunately the court could not sit.
Superintendent Ackah said whilst the Investigator was preparing document at the court to send the suspect back to the Police cells, the suspect was seen sleeping on one of the benches in the court room.
According to Superintendent Ackah when they were ready to pick the suspect back to police custody he collapsed on the bench and was rushed to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Dr Apetorgbor Dzordzegbe, Medical Superintendent of the Agona Swedru Government Hospital told the Press that Kofi Takyi died before reaching the hospital. He said the body of Kofi Takyi has been deposited in the Morgue awaiting autopsy to establish the cause of death.
