Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp has slammed Ghana defender Mohammed Awal for his poor form in the South African top-flight over the past few weeks.
Awal, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the South African top-flight, has seen an indifferent form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Some think clubs European club being linked to the Ghanaian player has affected the defender’s concentration as he seeks to exit for greener pasture in Europe.
Awal was taken off at half-time of their South Africa FA Cup defeat against SuperSport on Saturday because Middendorp blamed him for the equaliser.
Middendorp is disappointed with Awal over his recent showing but is keen on working out how to get him to return to his best form.
“We must decide how to get the best out of Mohamed Awal and him into the right shape and concentrated,” said the German-born coach.
“He is one of the best defenders in the league but he is now in a slump.
“He is either really good or bad, there is no in between,” said Middendorp.
A win for Maritzburg at home to Arrows on Wednesday would keep up their bid for a first-ever top eight finish and participation in next season’s MTN8.
