Land reform will empower Nigerians – Falae

By DAYO JOHNSON

FORMER Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, says the Systematic Land Titling and Registration (SLTR) embarked upon by the Federal Government will resolve land disputes across the country.

Falae spoke in Akure at a meeting of stakeholders on SLTR in Akure South council area of the state.

Other opinion leaders and stakeholders who spoke at the meeting include the Deji of Akureland, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, chiefs and village heads who unanimously said that the programme will liberate the people.

The erstwhile SGF said at the sensitisation programme, held at the Deji’s  palace, that the programme is a welcome exercise that will resolve land disputes which had become worrisome across the country.

He described  the exercise as a revolutionary move to also empower the people because certificates of occupancy (C of O) can be used as collateral to obtain credit for investment.

Adesida, while also speaking at the occasion, said that Ondo people will cooperate to ensure the success of the programme, adding that  land owners will be empowered to have access to incontestable C of O while land acquired by government for public interest will be better compensated.

A land specialist with the Growth and Employment in States, GEMS, Austen Okumo, who explained the benefits to the stakeholders, said that after the exercise, C of O will be issued within 30 days.

Okumo added that within five years, all lands in Ondo would have been titled.

Speaking at the meeting, the state Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr Bode Famose, said the land reform exercise is a sure way for societal transformation.
