Central Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwamena Duncan has questioned the motivation for the selection of the Bible passage from 2 Corinthians 4: 8 and 9 by President John Dramani Mahama, which was contained in a speech he read during this year’s National Thanks Giving Day.
President Mahama quoted 2 Corinthians chapter 4: 8 and 9 which states that: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed”.
He referred the two versus from the eight book of the New Testament to buttress a Thanks Giving Day address which was full of hope and conviction for the immediate future of the country.
He made these statements to inspire the citizenry, to believe that there are better days ahead and that the persecution we are going through as a country would come to an end soon.
The First Gentleman of the land made this speech in the midst of seemingly unending series of industrial agitations on the labour front, the first was National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) followed by the University Teachers Association (UTAG) , the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), the Government Hospital Pharmacists and now, the threat by the Judicial Service of Ghana (JSG) to begin a strike action soon if government, represented by the Fair Wages and salaries Commission (FWSC) does not meet their obligation by paying up allowance arrears for the year 2012.
According to Kwamena Duncan, “the Bible has been structured in such a way that, everyone can quote a verse to support whatever activity he is undertaking. That is why we get drunkards always saying that the Bible says ‘you can drink but don’t get drunk’”.
“The President says we are pressed on all sides but we are not crushed. So I want to know from President Mahama, How did the persecution come”?
In the view of the NPP communicator, President Mahama could have the answer to the cause of the woes of the country because he is of the perception that the tax payers money was used in financing the most extravagant campaign experienced by Ghanaians in the history of this country.
He further urged the President to come out to tell the citizenry the origins of what is befalling this country, in order for the populace to unite and chart a common course towards the betterment of everyone.
