Rugby league launched in Accra

Other Sports of Tuesday, 9 April 2013 Source: Daily Graphic The Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) has launched the Greater Accra 15’s League at the Accra Sports Stadium Sunday.At the launch in Accra yesterday, the president of GRA, Gifty Efua Annan-Myers, entreated Ghanaians to embrace the newly-introduced 15’s league, which is an Olympic criterion sport.Competing in the inaugural league are teams such as University of Ghana, Cosmos Buffalos, Teshie Spartans, IDAS Sports Rugby Club and Dansoman Hurricanes.Nurevas Food Ghana is sponsoring the league to the tune of GH¢10,000.The acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Madam Alice Attipoe, commended the GRA for initiating various moves to popularise rugby after just 10 years as an organised sport in the country.She said her outfit would support only sporting associations which were prepared to “help themselves’’ and not those just looking up to the govwernment to survive.The NSA boss charged officials of the so-called lesser-known sports, in particular, to go the extra mile instead of just relying on government for support to make their respective associations vibrant.
