President John Mahama has given assurances that with the rate of work currently ongoing at the Takoradi 2 Thermal Power Project (T2) in Aboadze, Ghana would soon be a net exporter of power if it achieves its target of 5000 megawatts of power by 2016.
The President also confirmed that the Ghana Gas Project would be completed by the end of the year.
Speaking while on a tour of the Takoradi 2 Thermal Power Project (T2) in Aboadze, he noted: “I am confident that the target date of processing and supplying our own gas from the jubilee field to the thermal plant by the end of this year is achievable.”
President Mahama was in the Western region on Monday to inaugurate the 132 megawatts T3 Power project at Aboadze, jointly owned by the Volta River Authority and TAQA Energy of Abu Dhabi.
“We need to keep ahead of the growth in demand of energy which is currently estimated at 7% to 10% per anum. Our current plan therefore is to have installed generating capacity of 5000 megawatts by 2016” the President noted.
According to him, the project would add an additional 110 megawatts of energy, a significant step towards realizing the 5000MW target.
“The country has a total in store generating capacity of 2445 megawatts. In 2009, our total in store capacity was 1810 and so it means step by step we are heading towards our 5000 megawatts target.
I believe that we would even exceed it and make Ghana a net exporter of power.”
