BENIN—EDO State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the state governor, Mr. Adama Oshiomhole, to take the path of honour and resign from office as governor of the state for allegedly committing perjury.
State chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, told newsmen in Benin, that the governor committed perjury, when he swore on oath and allegedly lied about his age. He said the governor is 61 years old and not 60 which he celebrated with funfair last Thursday.
Reacting, Special Adviser (Media) to the governor, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said Oshiomhole was 61 years old and that the error which put the governor’s age at 60 was cause by the printer of the birthday brochure, adding that the governor pointed it out but it was too late as the event had been scheduled for that day.
Pointing out that Governor Oshiomhole had never celebrated his birthday, Afegbua explained that the governor’s last birthday was organised by a committee of friends and that public funds were not spent.
He described PDP as a “busy body and attention seeking political party, looking for any means to get public attention.”
But Chief Orbih insisted that the governor swore to an affidavit before the Edo State High Court that he was born on April 4, 1952, but he had, since he was sworn into office in 2008, consistently celebrated his birthday as April 4, 1953.
Orbih said: “The governor deposed to an affidavit before a High Court that he was born on April 4, 1952. You can see the dilemma we are facing. Was Adams Oshiomhole born on April 4, 1953 or April 4, 1952? In the history of the world, no man has been born in two different years.”
