Awka – Some stakeholders of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have commended the peaceful and successful conduct of the party’s national convention.
They also lauded the emergence of Chief Maxi Okwu as its National Chairman.
The convention, which started on Sunday, lasted till the early hours of Monday at the Women Development Centre, Awka.
The convention also elected Alhaji Sigir Maidoya, the National Secretary, Chief Chris Uche, National Vice-Chairman (South), Dr Elijah Onwuka, National Vice-Chairman (South-East), Alhaji Tijani idris and National Vice-Chairman (North –West).
A former Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili, said that the convention had ushered in a new era for the party.
“We have now moved to the next level; APGA is the party to beat because of the success it achieved at the convention.
“Whoever goes to the media to say anything against the convention should not be listened to,” Akunyili, a senatorial candidate of the party in 2011, said.
Chief Regan Ufomba, the party’s candidate in the 2011 governorship election in Abia, said that the success of the convention represented a new beginning for the party.
According to Ufomba, the spirit and soul of APGA has returned to the party.
He said the peaceful conduct of the convention was the legacy of APGA’s late leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu, for the party.
“APGA is the house Ikemba left for us, we can’t allow it to die and that is why we had to follow democratic process in conducting the convention,” he said.
On his part, Massala, said that the convention portrayed good omen for the party.
“We have never had a transparent convention in APGA, all we have had is affirmation of candidates.
“This convention has given party faithful the opportunity to partake in a democratic process which we have been yearning for.
“What we have done here outweighs the litigation in court because the convention represents the opinion of the majority of party members,” Massala said.
He also commended Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra for the leadership role he played in restructuring the party.
Also, Dr Isa Arzuka-Jega, the Chairman of all state chairmen of the party, described the convention as “the beginning of a great beginning for APGA and Nigerian politics.”
He advised the new leadership to be people oriented and love their followers.
He appealed to APGA’s factional National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, to sheath the sword and embrace reality. (NAN)
