Chelsea have offered Ghana midfielder Michael Essien to Real Madrid for free, according to reports in the Spanish press.
The 30-year-old joined Los Blancos on loan at the beginning of the season after being considered surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
Essien was once considered amongst the most feared midfielders in the world.
However a spate of injuries and poor form in recent years has seen the stock of the former Lyon midfielder decline significantly.
The Blues according to the reports, now want to cut their costs by shipping off the Ghana international permanently with his loan spell at Madrid due to expire at the end of the season.
Essien has two more years left on his existing contract with Chelsea but the Stamford Bridge outfit are reportedly looking to ease pressure on their wage bill by selling off some of its stars.
The English club will however not ask anything in return if Real Madrid agree to sign Essien on a permanent basis.
It is however unclear if the Spanish champions will accept the offer for the player who has made close to 30 appearances for the side despite being down the perking order to the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira at the Santiago Bernabeu.
