STAR-Ghana supports Wa Municipal PTA/SMCs coalition with 57,000 dollars

Wa, April 5, GNA – STAR-Ghana, a multi-donor pooled funding mechanism, has supported the Wa Municipal Parent Teacher Association/School Management Committees (PTA/SMC) Coalition with 57,000 dollars.

The amount is meant to strengthen the capacity of 21 PTAs and SMCs in the Municipality for the next three years beginning from December 2011 to October 2014.

Madam Ruby Yaap, a member of the Coalition, disclosed this during the 5th Annual General Meeting of the Coalition in Wa.

Madam Yaap said the meeting was also part of the 3-year long activities of the Coalition to strengthen its capacity in achieving quality education in Wa Municipal.

She expressed gratitude to the Christian Africa Relief Trust, a UK based charity organization, for donating a 40-footer container full of Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) to the Coalition.

Madam Yaap also acknowledged H and L Powell and Friends, Ghacem Foundation, Jennifer Scantlebury, a UK based Philantrophist, Jacob’s Well Ghana, a charity based organization among others for various support given to the Coalition.

She said students from Columbia University in New York City and the Harvard Law School, visited the country to study the Coalition’s work for a week in relation to their study on community work on school based management with support from Transparency International.

Madam Yaap said the Coalition undertook various activities in 2012 including financial management training, needs assessment workshop, monitoring and evaluation workshop and policy advocacy workshop to build its capacity to deliver on its mandate of achieving quality education in the Wa Municipality.

The meeting, which was attended by SMC/PTA Chair persons, 132 Head teachers, and officials from the Wa Municipal Education Directorate, saw the election of new executives for the Coalition. GNA
