Accra, April 4, GNA – Government will decentralize the Department of Social Welfare, Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, children and Social on Wednesday noted.

She said the Ministry would also introduce some social interventions to alleviate the suffering of its departments from the challenges it faces.

Nana Oye Lithur was speaking at a two-day workshop organized by the Department of Children (DOC) in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare (DSW) in Accra.

She said the Ministry would also strengthen the Governing Council of the Persons with Disability (PWD) and monitor the release of their share of the Common Fund.

Nana Oye Lithur said the Ministry was sourcing funding from the World Bank to expand the Social and Child Units and the Juvenile Justice Units.

She said prosecution of domestic violence cases was not encouraging last year and that the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police would also be strengthened.

Nana Oye Lithur said the Ministry would also increase funding to build a strong Information Technology (I.T) and Data Centre for the Ministry and its department for common and easy communication.

Madam Mariama Yayah, Director of the DOC, said the workshop was to strategize and streaming Gender and Budgeting in the various departments.

She said the Department appreciated the support of the Ministry and thanked the participants for their swift response to the call.
