Department of Social Welfare to be decentralized – Gender Minister

Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, has noted that Government plans of decentralizing the Department of Social Welfare to ensure efficient service delivery.

The Minister has also noted the introduction of other social interventions aimed at alleviating the several challenges that have militated against the Department in the discharge of its duty. She made the remarks at a two-day workshop held in Accra by the Department of Children (DoC) in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare.

Speaking to, former Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mr. Stephen Adongo said the move which was “in the right direction, had been on the drawing board for a while”.

Nana Oye Lithur also noted the strengthening of the Governing Council of the Persons with Disability (PWD) while monitoring the release of their share of the Common Fund.

According to her, the Ministry was sourcing funding from the World Bank for expansion of the Social and Child Units as well as the Juvenile Justice Units.

Noting low levels of prosecution of domestic violence cases for 2012, the minister said the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police would also be strengthened.

Nana Oye Lithur also said her Ministry aims at strengthening its Information Technology and Data Centre for improved communication.
