HISTORY WAS made last Saturday at the Kumasi Squash Club where for the first time, the Patron’s Title was retained by the defending champions.

Patron Nana Yaw Owusu’s team chalked that enviable feat by defeating Patron Dan Owiredu’s team by 5-4 to keep the giant trophy for another year.

The annual tournament is played among the teams of the two patrons of the club, Nana Yaw Owusu and Dan Owiredu.

It is aimed ostensibly to foster unity and friendship among members of the club on every Easter Saturday.

Since the inception of the tournament, no defending champion has been able to retain his title.

Patron Nana Yaw Owusu’s Team broke the jinx in a grand style this Saturday as they whitewashed their opponents.

The history-making team comprised Cudjoe Dekyi, E.K. Bonsu, Emana, Lawyer Coffie, Awal, Frank Donkor, Lawyer Oppong and Nana Opoku.

Patron Nana Yaw Owusu, who is Otumfuo’s Mpaboahene, was extremely delighted over the great feat chalked for the first time by his team.

He said the Kumasi Squash Club is eager to work assiduously to help move squash from its current status as a lesser known sport.

Patron Dan Owiredu, President, Chamber of Commerce, said the tournament was held to create awareness about squash as a sport in the country.

Utterly dejected about the painful defeat that he his team suffered, he promised that his team would bounce back next year.
