It is often said that a wicked elder sows suffering for his children. In a similar manner, a former coordinator for the Nasara club of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the East Ayawaso constituency, Sheikh Awal Larry, has revealed that, if there is any creature on earth working seriously to retard the progress of the NPP, it is no other person than the flagbearer of the party in the 2012 presidential election, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In his opinion, the ill-informed decision by Nana Akufo-Addo to dispute the results of the 2012 election, which has emboldened him to continue to present himself as the leader of the party is holding the party from reorganisation in order to focus its attention and energy towards the 2016 election.

Sheikh Awal Larry, who is also the President of the group Peace Call Humanitarian Service (PCHS), noted that: “Nana Akufo-Addo is the only biggest enemy of the NPP currently, he is using the petition at the Supreme Court to hold the party to ransom thereby preventing it from organising elections to elect new leaders from the polling stations level to the national level. Currently, the leadership of the NPP has failed to organise elections to elect new leaders because the party is in court and all members must put their shoulders to the wheel and support it… that alone is dangerous.”

In an exclusive interview with The Al-Hajj, the respected Muslim cleric who has not hidden his abhorrence to his party’s court case, explained that, going by the NPP constitution, the defeated presidential hopeful ceased to be the leader of the party the very day he lost the 2012 election to President John Mahama.

He stated that for Nana Akufo-Addo to be hiding behind the cloak of the lawsuit at the Supreme Court and preventing the party from preparing for 2016 election is nothing but an agenda to continue to hold his grips on the party and eventually throw it into disarray.

“The party has sacrificed for Nana Akufo-Addo by committing resources to allow him to run for the presidency on two unsuccessful occasions and it is time for him to also sacrifice for the party by throwing in the towel immediately and allow the party to re-organise from the grass roots level to the top,” Sheikh Larry stated.

He added that by refusing to accept an election result which has been given a clean bill of health by both local and international organisations, the former Foreign Affairs minister in the Kufuor administration is just looking for ways to replicate post-election violence which devastated some African countries.

“Have we soon forgotten about what happened in Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Liberia, and Ivory Coast…? Who says this cannot happen in Ghana? It is important for all of us to be aware of individuals or group of people who want to rule or be recognised by all means,” the Alan devotee noted.

The PHCS President noted that it would have been a mark of true nationalism if Nana Akufo-Addo organised a press conference to announce his resolve to withdraw the election petition in court and allow for the party to focus its energy on preparing for the next election.

He charged the current leadership of the party to give way for new one, if they think they are tired and lack ideas to run the party.
