Okonjo’s kidnap: Arrested palace guard a betrayer – Monarch

BY AUSTIN OGWUDA
ASABA — OBI of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom, Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, has described the arrest of his palace guard in connection with the kidnap saga of his wife, Professor Kamene as a betrayal of trust and that he should be allowed to pay the full price for his action.

He stated this while fielding questions from newsmen at his palace in Ogwashi-Uku yesterday, while commenting on the Benin Court of Appeal judgment which ruled in his favour as the rightful occupier of the Obiship of Ogwashi-Uku.

He said: “You can imagine, it is a pity I could have brought a picture showing you this young man who was arrested as being one of those who used to bear the ada, the insignia of the Obi.

“In fact, he has found a job in the polytechnic (Ogwashi-Uku) as a security officer. I later banned him from coming here (palace). He is with the authority. It is none of my business. They will find out. They are arresting all those who had terrorized this area by kidnapping people and demanding sums of money.

“I know a lot about  what he has got, how much money he has even in his bank account. It is unbelievable and he couldn’t account for it and so I stayed clear. I am not the police, I am not State Security, I am not the Joint Task Force, I am not the Army, I am not a Naval officer nor an Air Force officer.

“They all have their intelligence services and they are trying to stop this kidnapping thing. I know that a lot of the kidnappers have been caught, there are still some of them who are likely to be  caught.

“You can see Prof. Kamene Okonjo (seated beside him). She was taken away from here (palace). We  didn’t know this young man was one of them but now we know. So I am sorry I don’t know what will happen to him. The country has its rules and regulations so that is that”, he stated.

Court has vindicated me

On the  Court of Appeal, Benin Division, which declared the Umu Obi Obahai royal family of Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State as the only family qualified to produce the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, upholding him (Okonjo) as the rightful king of Ogwashi-Uku having come from the Umu Obi Obahai royal line of Ogwashi-Uku, he said: “There is no controversy or ambiguity over the issue again. That has been decided.

“The other party can make all the noise they like, that is their headache. I think the situation is very clear. I am the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and on the throne.”
