Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are ruling out any possibility that the surgery they conducted to separate the now famous conjoined twins led to their death.
The doctors say the twins “were doing well” immediately after the surgery but hours later their condition started deteriorating.
The first twin died Wednesday evening, barely 24 hours after the surgery and the other, who was said to be in critical condition, also passed away Thursday morning.
One of the 17 doctors who operated on the babies, Dr Boateng Nimako, told Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah the surgery, complex as it was, had nothing to do with their death.
“… [The deaths] is not something that has anything to do with the surgery…” he maintained.
Dr Nimako however could not readily state what caused the sudden death of the twins, except to say investigations have been initiated to ascertain that.
“I’m feeling a bit depressed, we were all emotionally attached to them…
“[Their death] is something that has affected us [doctors] a lot and brought our morale down…” he added.
Dr Nimako said he and his colleagues would draw experiences from the unfortunate incident.
