Let Us Embrace The Gay Community

An independent candidate in the 2008 Presidential elections, Kwesi Amoafo Yeboah, has said that there is a community of homosexuals in Ghana and must be given the opportunity to be helped by the society.

According to him, Ghanaians should not be hypocritical with the issues of homosexuals and admit their existence so as to tackle the matter holistically.

Though he is not in support of homosexuality, he wants the situation where people can come out boldly to declare their sexual orientation and seek help.

“We refer to them as though they are an enemy of the nation getting ready to attack Ghana, but these people are our brothers and sisters. Some are even killed because they are gay, this does not make sense to me at all.

“People make the argument that, it is foreign to our culture but culture evolves…female genital mutilation is part of the culture we talk about but there is no one in this Country who would say this practice should be continued.

“In the past, when a chief dies, people were killed to ‘accompany the chief’, but we have stopped because culture has evolved.” Mr. Amoafo Yeboah stated.

The onetime Presidential hopeful and Chairman of I-TEL Ghana, admonished all religious people in the country to be tolerant of homosexuals and pray for them.

He is of the view that, when the homosexuals feel safe, they would come out knowing they would not be treated unfairly.

Speaking to Peace FM, Amoafo Yeboah was responding to issues that he supported gays.

“I support gay rights! I think every Ghanaian and indeed every human being deverves (sic) protection of their human rights,” the renowned businessman posted on his facebook wall.

This posting on his facebook wall(a social media platform) has generated various forms of arguments.

The topical issue of gay and lesbianism recently resurfaced when President John Mahama nominated human rights activist and now minister Nana Oye Lithur to head the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
