The Madina District Magistrate Court has granted Kwaku Ababio, the driver of the ‘bola’ truck, which crushed two University of Ghana students to death, a GH¢15,000 bail with two sureties, one to be justified when he appeared before the court yesterday.

The Legon Police Command preferred charges of inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm against him.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Agnes Boafo, told the court that on Friday, January 18, 2013 at about 1:30am, Gilbert Darko (aged about 25) was driving a Kia Avera taxi with registration number GE 645 X, from Okponglo towards the University of Ghana with two passengers on board.

Kwaku Ababio, 47, was driving a Mercedes Benz refuse truck registered GE 4707-12 in the company of his mate from Madina towards the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout. The two vehicles collided at the Okponglo Traffic intersection.

The occupants of the taxi sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where Lordina Fobih and her friend Deborah Benaya were pronounced dead on arrival. The cabbie, Gilbert Darko, is, however, on admission.

The Magistrate, Mariama Samnio, after hearing the facts of the case, granted the accused bail while the docket was forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.

Meanwhile, the truck driver may have to spend sometime in the custody of the police if he fails to meet the bail terms.

As at press time yesterday, a source said the accused was still in police cells.
