NOBEL LAUREATES on NWI VISIT to Liberia

(Monrovia) – An all women’s delegation–comprised of four Nobel Peace Laureates, journalists, businesswomen, global and grassroots women’s rights activists and philanthropists– arrives in Monrovia tomorrow to begin a six-day visit to the country.

While in Liberia, the delegation will listen and learn from women working towards peace and reconciliation in Liberia, in particular on issues related to sexual violence. Delegates hope to bring back to the United States and Canada a greater understanding of the important contributions women are making to sustainable peace in Liberia, as well as the challenges women face. Delegates will communicate what they learn to international policy makers, including those in the US, Canada and Europe.

While in the country the Nobel Women’s Initiative will meet with a wide range of non-governmental women’s groups, UN personnel, Youth & Student Leaders, the Women Legislature Caucus, the Women Legislative Caucus and other high-level Government Officials, Women Peace-builders in Totota & Weala, Bong County, amongst others.

The delegation is organized by the Nobel Women’s Initiative, an organization created by women Nobel Peace Laureates who support the work of women forging peace in conflict and post-conflict areas of the world. The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) is hosting the delegation. GPFA’s President, Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Roberta Gbowee is a member of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, and Co-Chair of the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict.

Following their tour in Liberia, members of the Nobel Women’s Initiative delegation will also visit Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to bring pressure to bear on African leadership in the African Union to commit more political will to ending rape and sexual violence.

Before leaving Liberia, the delegation will hold a press conference on Thursday, January 24th, 2013 where the Media will have the opportunity to engage the Nobel Laureates directly.
