Unannounced Power Interruptions In The Offing – ECG

Consumers of electricity would have to endure unannounced power interruptions in the coming days as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it cannot assure of sustained power supply.

The company says it has on some occasions experienced difficulties with its own transmission plants coupled with the shortage in power production from the Volta River Authority.

This has resulted in power outages in parts of Accra and beyond. The head of operations, Tetteh Okine told XYZ News these happenings are unfortunate but unavoidable.

He said as and when they receive information about such power shortfalls, the ECG will be forced to shed load “before you try to get some information to the public because immediately you have to react. The message can only come later.”

Since the West African Gas Pipeline developed a fault last year, the country has experienced power cuts nationally due to shortfall in power generation. The pipeline has since been fixed but supply of gas for generation is still low.

Last year, President Mahama promised to ensure that load-shedding is a thing of the past by the end of this year. Over the weekend the ECG had to shed some load due to the breakdown of one of its plant in Tema.
