Two arrested in connection with Bawku shooting

In a dawn raid this morning, police in Bawku, Upper East Region, arrested two out of four suspects in connection with a Sunday shooting that left one man injured.

Bawku Divisional Police Commander ACP Kwaku Boadu Prepah reported that while arresting one of the men, 23-year-old Awudu Issaka, alias “Bob,” police retrieved life rifle ammunition, which ACP Prepah described as evidence of complicity in the crime.

Speaking to Joy News ACP Preprah said the plan is to take the arrested men to court and to continue the search for those who have eluded capture thus far.

Mr. Prepah also said that the shooting victim, Osman Shaibu, is in fine health; the bullet that hit him only grazed his finger.

He noted two major difficulties that the Bawku police face as they try to prevent these types of incidents. First, because residents are reluctant to give up information on local people known to perpetuate violence, the police cannot gather information on all the locally owned firearms and many thus remain in circulation.

Secondly, he said, both of the arrested men have so far denied any connection to the crime and because there are no major ongoing disputes in Bawku, the police are currently clueless as to the cause of the shooting.

With so many weapons around, he said, simple arguments can escalate into deadly confrontations.
