Ex-table tennis star laments dearth of tourneys

Former Nigerian table tennis player, Toyin Okenla-Ojeaga, has lamented the dearth of table tennis tournaments in the country, saying that the development has is a major factor responsible for the dwindling fortune of the game in the country.

“During my days, we had many tournaments sponsored by top companies that inspired people, like Coca-Cola, Cadbury, Lever Brothers, Nigerian Breweries, Elephant Cement and the Asoju Oba Cup in Lagos. This is not the case for the current crops of players, who do not have tourneys to compete in,” the Bendel 1981 National Sports Festival medalist said.
According to Okenla-Ojeaga, a US based former table tennis player, Nigeria has a lot of talents that must not be allowed to waste, a reason she decided to sponsor an age grade tournament in Lagos.
“I decided to sponsor a tournament for the U-17 students in Lagos to keep the players busy and discover talents because I am an advocate of youth empowerment through education,” she said.
