‘NSCDC to be more involved in internal security’

Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro

Federal Government has said the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps would be more involved in internal security as part of moves to combat the security challenge in the country.

Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, said with the increase in the corps’ staff strength and armed personnel, the NSCDC would take part in greater security operations based on increasing demand by Nigerians.

Speaking at a ministerial retreat for the officers and men of the corps in Abuja on Wednesday, Moro declared that the operational style of the NSCDC would enhance internal security in 2013.

He said, “There is no doubt that the account of armed banditry and insurgence have had negative impact on the lives and economy of our country. Both Nigerians and foreigners desire nothing less than a safe haven to live. The old method of response to security is no longer applicable in the case of security challenge trend we have witnessed in Nigeria in the recent years.”

The minister stated that his ministry would concentrate on capacity -building and provision of facilities for training and re-training for the corps, adding that synergy among all security agencies would end insurgences in the country.

Commandant- General of the Corps, Dr. Ade Abolurin, said the organisation was restrategising based on the lesson learnt from the previous years, to ensure a better security record in 2013.
