Government has expressed displeasure about what it describes as the unfair airfares charged by foreign airlines. Transport Minister Collins Dauda says the exorbitant fares are undermining the realization of the full potential benefits of the growing aviation industry by Ghanaians.<\/p>\n
He bemoaned the disparities in international airfares and therefore called on air transport operators to imperatively consider reviewing their fares. He said \u201cFor a round trip from Accra to Amsterdam which takes six hours, KLM economy class charges 2420 cedis or 1530 dollars. But for Amsterdam \u2013NewYork – Amsterdam is 1,282 cedis or 800 dollars for the same economy class\u201d.<\/p>\n
Clearly, there is unfairness in the market. We take this opportunity to make a passionate appeal to the international airlines to consider reviewing their fares so that many more people can find air travel very affordable and increase the patronage of air travels in this country\u2019\u2019 he concluded.<\/p>\n
The minister was speaking at the commissioning of an ultra modern rescue and fire fighting facility for the Kotoka International Airport. The fire fighting facility comes with a training a school, ten appliance bay and among others an emergency operations services and the latest air traffic management. It is the first of its kind in West Africa as part of the infrastructural development initiatives at the Kotoka International Airport.<\/p>\n
Vice President John Mahama who commissioned the project also said the facelift of the airport is one of the many projects government plans to undertake at the various airports in the country. \u201cWe are going to see major new developments in terms of making our major international airports and other airports accessible by air and not only by road. With the particular case of Takoradi airport, the intention is to move it from the current air base and secure a new site to build an entirely new airport\u201d.<\/p>\n
With the kinds of developments that are taking place in the oil and gas sector in that region, the need for safe aviation in that region is very necessary.
