Cape Town – Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa<\/a>‘s application for an interdict against the Khayelitsha commission of inquiry will be heard on Thursday in the Western Cape High Court, ministerial spokesperson Zweli Mnisi has confirmed.<\/p>\n

It was originally set down for Monday.<\/p>\n

Mnisi said the interdict argument would be heard, followed by discussions on “the substantive matters in relation to the commission”.<\/p>\n

Mthethwa filed papers in the high court in November to have the commission temporarily suspended, pending a review of the decision on its establishment.<\/p>\n

Provincial Premier Helen Zille<\/a> set up the commission in August to probe allegations of police inefficiency in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.<\/p>\n

She said the commission was necessary because there was a breakdown of trust between Khayelitsha residents and the police.<\/p>\n

Headed by retired judge Catherine O’Regan and advocate Vusi Pikoli<\/a>, the commission was to hold public hearings from 12 November to 14 December. A full report was due on 24 February 2013.<\/p>\n

The commission has since been suspended pending the outcome of the court hearings.<\/p>\n

The Social Justice Coalition, which led the call to establish the commission, has been included as a respondent in Mthethwa’s application.<\/p>\n
