{"id":237663,"date":"2012-12-09T17:24:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-09T17:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2012\/12\/ghana-party-alleges-vote-fraud\/"},"modified":"2012-12-09T17:24:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-09T17:24:00","slug":"ghana-party-alleges-vote-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2012\/12\/09\/ghana-party-alleges-vote-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana party alleges vote fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div class=\"caption body-narrow-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/64661000\/jpg\/_64661960_64661958.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" alt=\"Presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo greets a supporter in Kibi, December 7\" \/><span class=\"c1\">Nana Akufo-Addo&#8217;s party say he won the election<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"introduction\" id=\"story_continues_1\">Ghana&#8217;s opposition New Patriotic Party has accused the governing party of fixing the result of Friday&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<p>The NPP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenewpatrioticparty.org\/index.php\/press\/110-press\/our-press\/393-john-mahama-and-the-ndc-s-unacceptable-systematic-rigging-of-election-2012\">said in a statement<\/a> that the National Democratic Congress conspired with Electoral Commission staff to boost its tally across the country.<\/p>\n<p>There has been no response from the NDC or the commission.<\/p>\n<p>Local media reported partial results showing NDC candidate President John Mahama had a narrow lead over NPP rival Nana Akufo-Addo.<\/p>\n<p>Joy FM said Mr Mahama looked likely to gain more than 50% of the vote, which would give him overall victory without needing a run-off vote.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana, one of the world&#8217;s fastest growing economies, is regarded as one of Africa&#8217;s most stable democracies.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Akufo-Addo lost the 2008 presidential poll by one percentage point, but accepted the result.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cross-head\">&#8216;Systematic stealing&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, his party said they had &#8220;enough concrete evidence&#8221; to prove that he actually won this year&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption body-narrow-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/64662000\/jpg\/_64662136_64662061.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" alt=\"People wait to vote at a polling station in Kibi, December 7\" \/><span class=\"c1\">Turnout was said to be roughly 90%, and voting continued into Saturday in some areas<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The ruling NDC conspired with certain EC staff in constituencies across the country to falsify the election results and thereby abuse the mandate of the people of Ghana,&#8221; the party said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was this planned, systematic stealing of votes at the collation level that was, thankfully, discovered in time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The party cited discrepancies between initial tally sheets and the results reported in the media.<\/p>\n<p>It said thousands of votes had been stolen from Mr Akufo-Addo and added to Mr Mahama&#8217;s tally.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition demanded an inquiry before official results are released.<\/p>\n<p>Election commissioner Kwadwo Afari-Gyan told Reuters news agency he was not yet aware of the NPP complaint.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC has not yet responded to the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Observers said Friday&#8217;s vote, for a new president and parliament, passed off in a largely peaceful manner.<\/p>\n<p>Some glitches with a new finger-printing system meant that voting continued into Saturday in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The turnout was reported to be high, at roughly 80%.<\/p>\n<p>As a top exporter of cocoa and gold, Ghana is one of the world&#8217;s fastest-growing economies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 it saw economic growth of 14% and experts predict growth of 8% for 2012 and in 2013.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nana Akufo-Addo&#8217;s party say he won the election Ghana&#8217;s opposition New Patriotic Party has accused the governing party of fixing the result of Friday&#8217;s election.
