18:01 EST, 8 December 2012

We know him as the tough kid that’s turned into a bit of a heartthrob during his time on the X Factor, but James Arthur showed a more fragile side to him during the live show on Saturday.

The 24-year-old singer revisited his bedsit in the North East with his mentor Nicole Scherzinger and broke down into tears.

Revealing the tough times he’s had behind him, the singer opened up to his mentor about the ‘hell’ he’s been living in.

"'Life

‘Life was hell’: The singer opened up to his mentor about his hard times

James shocked Nicole as he showed her around in his tiny former bedsit.

Breaking down, the star said through his tears: ‘It’s really strange being here. I had quite a lot of hard times here.’

He continued: ‘I was in what I would describe as hell, life was just hell for me. It hadn’t just quite sunk in that I have achieved something until I came back.’

‘I never thought I’d become something, I never thought it would happen. Now I’m fulfilling my purpose and I’ve got my life back, I’ve been given a second chance to actually become something.’

"Breakdown:

Breakdown: James showed a different side to him as he broke down revisiting his old bedsit

"'Best

‘Best performance’: James belted out Feeling Good and received another standing ovation from the judges and the audience

But despite revealing the hard times he’s been through, the star went on to perform classic song Feeling Good, best known for its covers by Nina Simone and Michael Buble.

He received a standing ovation by the judges and the 10,000 strong audience in the Manchester Arena.

Gary Barlow once again called his performance the best of the series so far, praising the singer: ‘Our job is to sit here and give criticism, but when you get on the stage, I become an audience member for a second.’

‘That was your best performance to day by far, it was on another level.’

Louis

agreed, saying: ‘That was incredible. The idea of the X Factor is to

find someone with a unique talent that deserves a break and that person

is absolutely you.’

"Move

Move On Up: Jahmene kicked off the show in style with his take on the Curtis Mayfield classic

"Eighties

Eighties classic: Christopher first performed What A Feeling

Ahead of the three finalists performances, their former fellow contestants, including Rylan Clarke, Ella Henderson and Lucy Spraggan all took to the stage for a medley of hits.

The stage was set for the trio of James, Jahmene and Christopher to walk on stage, where they spoke about how it felt to be at the grand final.

James said: ‘I’m honoured to be here, hello Manchester.’

Jahmene admitted he was ‘excited to perform’, while Christopher admitted the X Factor had been ‘the best experience of my life, I’m so humbled to be here, thank you everyone’.

Jahmene was the first to sing out of the trio with his version of Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield, while Christopher took on 80s classic What A Feeling.

"Whop

Whop ’em Rylan style: Rylan Clarke opened the show with his take on Gangnam Style

Here comes the girls: Former X Factor contestants Ella Henderson (left) and Carolynne Poole returned to open the show

First up, Jahmene took Nicole back to his hometown of Swindon, and even took her to church.

The star said: ‘I’ve had loads of counseling and therapy, but church does it like nothing else. It’s my favourite day of the week.’

After his performance, the judges praised Jahmene on his transformation through the show. Tulisa said: ‘At your first audition you were a timid soul, and at boot camp you had panic attacks. Now you’re on stage in Manchester in front of 10,000 people. You looked confident and strong.’

Christopher took Gary back to Liverpool, where he was welcomed by his friends and fans on the doorstep of his grandmother Pat’s home, who had laid out a spread of sausage rolls and chocolate eclairs for the star.

"'Best

‘Best day of the week’: Jahmene took Nicole to his church and they both belted along with the choir

"Back

Back to me hometown: Christopher visited his old call centre co-workers in Liverpool

After belting out the 80s hit, the judges also wished Christopher luck in the final, despite the criticism he has received during the past weeks.

Nicole said: ‘Wow, what a feeling this is. You know what, it’s not easy what you did up there. Enjoy this because I know how hard you’ve worked.’

The three finalists came back to perform with their mentors later on.

Jahmene once again was up first to sing Whitney Houston’s classic Greatest Love with Nicole, although it didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

Nicole’s microphone broke down, after which Jahmene shared his throughout the performance.

"Real

Real stars: The two singers continued to belt out the song in perfect harmonies

"Making

Making everyone jealous: Christopher got to sing Rule The World while Gary accompanied him on his piano

"Make

Make You Feel My Love: Nicole sizzled in a leather outfit while she belted out the love song with James

Next up was Christopher Maloney, who took on Take That’s Rule The World with Gary behind the piano.

Nicole came back with a vengeance to sing Adele’s version of Make You Feel My Love with James Arthur. Dressed in a sexy leather outfit, the two harmonised and belted their way through the ballad.

Next up were performances by Kelly Clarkson, Rita Ora and Kylie Minogue, who all wowed the 10,000 strong audience in the Manchester Central arena.

However, the results were in and it was an emotional moment for Christopher Maloney, as it was revealed he was voted off the show.

She still got it! Kylie entertained the audience while the viewers at home got to voting

"Halftime

Halftime performances: Rita Ora and Kelly Clarkson also took the the stage during the X Factor final

Coming in third, the singer from Liverpool said: ‘You know what, I’m happy. After all the negative criticism I’ve had to go through, I still came in third.’

The audience loudly cheered for him as he left the stage.

James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas fell into each others arms and Nicole cheered as it was revealed her two boys were still left in the competition.

Small Jahmene even managed to lift up tall James in excitement as the two loudly cheered and screamed.

"Her

Her boys are through: Nicole cheered as both Jahmene and James continue to the next live show tomorrow
