AFTER six days of topflight squash competition, including some of the most gripping encounters in the history of the tournament, the eighth annual Cargolux inter-club squash championship came ended at the Lagos Country Club over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Haniel Hadison of the Lagos Country Club emerged champion of the men category by beating Clement Efakporire of Ikoyi Club 13\/11, 8\/11, 11\/9, 7\/11, 11\/7 in a highly physical final that kept the crowd at the squash section of the club on the edge of their seats during the game.<\/p>\n

Mike Nwabuzor of Ikoyi Club, nicked named \u201cTiger\u201d for his striking prowess, trounced Dele Opaola of UNILAG Senior Staff Club 11\/9, 11\/4, 11\/5 to win the veteran category, which is meant for players 50 years and above.<\/p>\n

In the national U-19 category, which is an innovation in the championship, Abubakar Bala of Niger State beat Babatunde Abubakar of Kwara State 11\/6, 11\/8, 11\/4 to clinch the highest prize in the debutants\u2019 category.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the end of the competition, President of the Nigeria Squash Racket Federation (NSRF), Femi Ajagbe, expressed satisfaction at the quality of the games played and the turnout of players, just as he commended Cargolux\/Global Cargo Centre for its commitment to the development of squash in the country.<\/p>\n

He further applauded the expansion of the tourney to include the national U-19 men, saying: \u201cGrooming future champions of the game is heartwarming to the federation. Sponsors of this competition must be commended for this laudable initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in conformity with the developmental plan of the Nigeria Squash Racket Federation to take the game to the highest level and also with that of the World Squash Federation, which is already bidding for its inclusion in the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
