NMA to Diaspora doctors: Help, don’t lament

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on their Nigerian counterparts abroad to stop bemoan about the deplorable condition in the health sector and assist in strengthening it.

The President of NMA, Dr Osahon Enabulele, told a conference of the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG) in Leeds, UK, to “stop lamenting or agonizing about the poor state of Nigerians’ health, but to move from the realm of idealism into the realm of realism by joining forces with their colleagues in Nigeria to re-organize the healthcare system.”

Enabulele said indicators of Nigeria’s health status remained “largely unsatisfactory” and attributed the lingering decay to “years of cumulative insults to Nigeria’s healthcare system.”

He noted that the insults come from poor commitment by the country’s political leaders, their frequent visits abroad for medical care, political instability and inconsistent policies.

Enabulele suggested “significant investment” in personnel, infrastructure and delivery as well as other social sectors that impact on health sector.
