Nigerian Chelsea footballer, John Mikel Obi has been a subject of racist chants for his role in Chelsea’s home draw with Italian champions, Juventus on Wednesday’s UEFA champions league match. The racist tweets have become too much for him to absorb, he has therefore decided to close his twitter account.
Mikel Obi obviously made a mistake in the match, leading to Juventus’ equalizer, but there was enough time for the team to recover before the goal, a chance they didn’t take. It was hardly Mikel’s fault totally, but the fans of Chelsea Football Club has decided to punish him just because he’s black.
The club has released a statement stating the abuse as ‘abhorrent’. The statement continues, “…racist tweets towards Mikel are totally unacceptable. Police informed. #CFC supports strongest action.”
The battle against racism in football is obviously far from won. Mikel has always been there for the Chelsea fans, but they have decided to turn their backs on him just because of an error that cost them just two points they could have lost any other day.
