Nelspruit, Mpumalanga –

A Mpumalanga health department director has appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court over tender fraud, police said on Wednesday.

Maxwell Sithole, 52, was granted R5000 bail when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

“It is alleged that Sithole fraudulently issued a tender to a service provider without following the necessary procedures and apparently for his personal gain,” Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said in a statement.

It was later found that the service provider had allegedly been paid without providing services. The fraud Sithole was accused of totalled “thousands of rands”.

The case was postponed to October 10. – Sapa
