File Photo – A businessman has been shot and wounded in a Cape Town shopping mall.

A businessman was shot and wounded in a Cape Town shopping mall on Monday, police said.

He was approached by three men as he parked his vehicle at the Vangate Mall in Athlone around 11am, Constable Sakhiwo Mbovane said.

He said the man and a passenger were on their way to deposit R50 000.

The gang demanded the money at gunpoint.

Mbovane said the businessman drew his gun and tried to shoot, but the gun jammed.

He was then shot three times by the men, twice in the leg and once in the arm, before they ran away without the money.

The passenger drove the man to hospital, where he was treated.

No arrests had been made by Monday afternoon. – Sapa
