SA and Qatar to intensify co-operation

South Africa and Qatar will step up co-operation in infrastructure development, the presidency said on Tuesday, Janaury 24, 2012.

This was agreed during President Jacob Zuma’s state visit to Qatar on Tuesday, spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

Zuma met Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani in Doha.

“The president seeks co-operation with Qatar in areas such as water, energy, construction, agriculture and general infrastructure development,” said Maharaj.

Zuma and bin Khalifa Al-Thani also discussed concrete projects in implementing South Africa’s new growth path, he said.

A delegation of ministers from South Africa would visit Qatar in February, 2012 to follow up the issues raised in the meeting.

South African and Qatar also have ties in the petrochemicals sector.

South Africa’s largest investment in the Middle East, Sasol’s gas-to-liquid facility, is located in Qatar

The country is the seventh largest supplier of crude oil to South Africa.

Zuma stopped over in Qatar en-route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.- Sapa
