Bayern Munich have received some troubling news from the treatment table in the wake of Friday’s 3-1 Bundesliga loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Following X-ray scans, the club confirmed on their official website that centre-back Daniel Van Buyten sustained a broken foot during the match, and that he will undergo an operation.
Though club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt refused to make a prognosis on the player’s recovery before treatment, it is expected that the 33-year-old will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.
The sporting director confirmed his side would not make a move to sign a replacement for Van Buyten before the winter transfer window closes.
“We have in Jerome Boateng a player who was in the first place meant to play in this position,” he said according to Bild. “In addition, Luiz Gustavo and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk can play in this position.”
Nerlinger did not mention the possibility of using troubled centre-back Breno in a central defensive rolel.
Late in Friday’s match, Van Buyten hobbled off in considerable pain and was replaced in defence by Luiz Gustavo. And according to Christian Nerlinger, the Brazilian is one of a number of options available to deputise for the veteran.
