FDB to destroy about 1,000 cartons of unwholesome chicken

The Food and Drugs Board has confiscated about a thousand cartons of unwholesome chicken parts. The Inspectorate Team’s monitoring of activities revealed that, Sucatrade Limited in Tema, Community One, had unwholesome chicken parts stored in its Bulk Cold Storage Facility.

Dr Mohammed Alfa, the official in charge of Animal Product and the Bio-Safety department told Joy News, the products were being kept under unwholesome conditions.

He said the laboratory analysis carried out on the product revealed that it was “heavily contaminated”.

According to him, the products, which had been heaped in the storage facility, were placed on the bare floor with pieces of cartons in it, adding “the state in which we found it wasn’t good and we felt that there is no way we’ll allow such a product to be repackaged for human consumption.

The products will therefore be destroyed with the consent of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) as it was being stored in a bonded warehouse.

Dr. Alfa said they will continue to monitor operations of all Bulk Cold Storage Facilities to ensure that they adhere strictly to good cold storage practices.

But the officials of Sucatrade Limited have however accused FDB of highhandedness. They describe the actions of the FDB as “an abuse of power and completely destructive” and further accuse them of failing to present the report on the laboratory test to their officials only to hear the news in the media.
