Kampala — A holiday athletics training camp started in Kabale District last week.

The camp, organised by Western Region Athletics Association (WRAA), is aimed at reviving and tapping talent in western Uganda, according to the body’s official Geoffrey Kagwa.

“We have been doing this for the past few years and the progress is encouraging,” Kagwa told Daily Monitor at the weekend. “Since this school holiday is longer, we hope to fully prepare the runners for the upcoming national cross-country season and hold some competitions,” he added.

Kagwa said he is handling the coaching alongside Mackaybeth Akankwasa. The duo are former national long distance runners. According to Kagwa, the camp running at Kabale Lower Primary School, is facilitated by WRAA members. “As members, we contribute money to make sure the runners are well fed,” he said.
