Despite the divergent news making the round that the 2011/2012 MTN Nigerian Premier League season would be postponed, the officials of NPL have reiterated that the league will still commence in spite of the proposed strike action by the Labour and Civil society organisations.
Revealing this to Inside Out Premier League just after the league congress in Abuja, Media Oficer of the board, Emme Njoku disclosed that the matches will still hold but all the games for week one would be played on Saturday, 7 January, 2012.
He said that the league have to start in other for the country to recover from the mess of last season and that having all the games on Saturday will enable clubs to return to their various base before any issue would come out of the planned strike by the labour.
“The league will commence this weekend with all week one matches holding on Saturday instead of only the Star match and other games the next day Sunday as earlier scheduled. By having all the games on Saturday, it will enable all the teams to get to their base early enough before anything can happy from the strike by labour,” Njoku said.
In the meantime, exception was given to the match between Kaduna Utd FC and Jigawa Golden Stars FC which is to be played on Wednesday 11th January, 2012 as a result of Kaduna Utd FC’s failure to pay players salaries. The NPL insists that the salaries must be paid on or before Monday 9th January, 2012 for the Wednesday’s match to be played. Failure to comply by Kaduna Utd FC will attract additional sanction.
